MTG Women

WOMEN'S DIRECTOR ADDRESS: GINA COLELLI

"I fell in love with MTG because of the people and the playing opportunities and to that end, the relationship has only gotten better.  As the Women's Director, I am fortunate to interact with the membership, be part of the decision making that benefits everyone and watch an organization grow in its numbers and its events.

The role of women in sports in America has a rich and vibrant history and also a marked lack of support from the culture at large.  MTG is an organization committed to the LGBT community and with that comes a desire and responsibility to provide ample opportunity for women to play tennis and foster an atmosphere that is friendly, fun and competitive.  Being a new tennis player, I'm encouraged by how the community of MTG embraced my membership and consistently encouraged me to come to events and "just play."

My favorite story is that 2 months after starting to play, I joined the Winter Doubles League (innocence rocks!) and on one particular night, my serve was so bad that I offered to just pass on serving because I was slowing up the game.  Without missing a beat, the opposing team said "no! no!  This is your opportunity to learn how to serve!  Take your time.  It's okay!" What a relief!  That moment solidified the initial feeling that MTG was truly committed to promoting tennis for all levels of players.  My teammate and I have the distinction of 2 wins and 52 losses for the season!  I can honestly say that each game was fun and the opposing team was warm and welcoming.  Of course, they won but what's a win if its so easy!! lol.

About MTG Women

MTG is committed to promoting women-friendly events and tennis teams in the Metropolitan area. Throughout the year, we offer numerous opportunities for social, recreational, and competitive tennis, including Women's Doubles, Mondays in the Park with Gina (seasonal) and Mixed Doubles events.

In all of our events, we like to keep the emphasis on having fun. That's not to say that we don't want to win -- many of us have strong competitive spirits -- but we tend to emphasize participation (everyone plays) over competition.

The club membership includes women of all playing levels, from advanced to just beginning, so you can be sure to find a good match for your abilities. Please send any questions to Gina Colelli, our Women's Director, via this form.

Benefits for MTG Women

While many women join MTG to participate in on our events, we also have many other benefits including:

  • Beginner's parties: Clinics with club pros, monthly social doubles and other non-competitive events
  • Tournaments:  including Marsha Day Club Championship and the Liberty Open
  • USTA teams: Playing on a team is a great experience and the fastest way to meet fellow MTG members. Many of our women members participate in the Mixed Doubles Season in the fall.  If you have questions or would like to join a team, just send a message to our Women's Director or email our Women's Director.
  • Socializing: Social events such as US Open outings, a holiday party, and a whole new group of friends!

MTG Women Testimonials

"From the first MTG event I attended, I felt welcome and comfortable, as if I had suddenly found myself back in touch with old friends. Members are quick to welcome newcomers and the friendly but competitive matches are always fun!"
- Sarah Strauss, member since 2010

"I've been involved with MTG since it started some 25 years ago.  I've made many lasting friendships through MTG, both on and off the courts.  MTG is very welcoming to tennis players of all levels, from beginners to advanced.  The playing parties and summer ladder are a great way to meet people at your own playing level.  The tournaments are both fun and competitive.  My favorite MTG yearly event is the Liberty Open where players come from all over the country and the world to compete at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.  Being a member of MTG has been a great experience that I'd recommend to anyone looking for great tennis, having fun and meeting new friends.
- Linda Clark, member since 1993

"Playing tennis in New York City can be tough, but being an MTG member makes it easy to find courts and friendly competition. Each and every event we've attended -- from winter leagues to summer tournaments -- we've been warmly welcomed on and off the court."
- Arlyn Tobias Gajilan & Robin Winn, members since 1991 and 2010 respectively
