Do I have to be a member to participate in MTG events?
No. Many of our events, such as our monthly singles and doubles parties are open to the general tennis public. This offers an opportunity for non-members and guests to be introduced to the group. However, most of our events (such as the Club Championships, and seasonal league competitions) are specifically reserved for our members. In addition, members pay a reduced rate to participate in our playing parties, receive a monthly newsletter, are updated about upcoming events, and have access to secured areas of the MTG website. Do you have to be single to play at the singles parties?
Not at all! This is actually a common misconception within social tennis organizations. While MTG provides an alternative social milieu for the gay and lesbian community, and while we are encouraged by friendships and connections that are made on the court, our events are geared to promote the development and enjoyment of the sport of tennis. Singles refers to singles playing parties (one-on-one format) rather than “unattached” singles. BACK TO TOP

I don’t know if I’m a very good player yet. Can I still play with MTG?
Absolutely! We strongly encourage players of all skill levels to join in our events. Our members range from those who played competitively on the collegiate level to those who have only recently picked up the game. We do our best to match players of similar skill level to avoid any player feeling overwhelmed or, conversely, underchallanged. Many of our members find our parties to be an excellent forum to work on their skills and improve their games. More information regarding rating your play can be found here. BACK TO TOP

How do I become a member?
To become a MTG member, you must complete the membership application. MTG’s season runs from September 1st through August 31st and memberships can be purchased for individuals or for households. Discounted dues apply for half-year memberships purchased after March 1st. To find the membership application, please go to the MEMBERSHIP page of our site. BACK TO TOP

Do I have to be gay or lesbian to join?
No. While MTG was created to provide recreational and competitive tennis in a gay and lesbian-friendly environment, we welcome everyone to participate in our events and to become members. BACK TO TOP

What is your privacy policy? Will my information be shared or made public?
We treat all the information you provide us as confidential. Only fields that you allow will be published in our directory. In addition, only members have access to secured areas of this site, which include the online members directory, league stats, events photos, etc. We do not make public or share your personal information with other organizations. How are the playing parties run?
MTG hosts monthly singles and doubles parties. Our singles events are run as round-robin pro-set play. The doubles parties play regulation games/sets. The women’s parties are exclusive to our female members and are run similar to our general doubles parties. You do not need to come with a partner to play in our doubles parties. Members are paired according to equivalent playing ability to ensure fun, competitive play. We also organize seasonal play such as the Winter Doubles League and the Summer Singles Ladder. For applications to our singles and doubles parties, as well as our other league events, go to the EVENTS page of our site. BACK TO TOP

Where do you play?
MTG does not own or run its own tennis facilities. We are bound by the same constraints as many of you are, playing tennis in New York City. We contract and reserve court time for our tennis events at various venues throughout the metropolitan area. Some of the typical venues we host events at are the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing, Queens and the NY Tennis Club in the Bronx. For a list of public tennis facilities around the city or for more information about obtaining a Tennis Permit, visit the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation website. BACK TO TOP

I’m not sure of how to rate my playing ability. How do I rate myself?
The primary purpose of establishing a rating for each member is to assure competitive and fun tennis. MTG is a member organization of the United States Tennis Association, and we use their rating classification (NTRP) as general guidelines for our events.

Further information about the NTRP system can be found on the USTA website. BACK TO TOP
